Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Communications and Information, will attend the 17th ASEAN Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministers Meeting (TELMIN) in Siem Reap, Cambodia, from 30 November to 1 December 2017. The ASEAN TELMIN is an annual meeting to discuss policy directions for the development of telecommunications and infocomm technology (ICT) in ASEAN.
2 The theme of the 17th ASEAN TELMIN is “ICT Connectedness and Readiness: Towards a Digital Integrated Community”. This year’s meeting will focus on efforts to enhance ICT connectivity and readiness among ASEAN Member States through the development of infrastructure, innovative services and digital skills. The aim is to help ASEAN seize opportunities in the digital economy and facilitate its transition into an Integrated Digital Community under the ASEAN ICT Masterplan 2020 (AIM 2020).
3 At the meeting, Minister Yaacob will speak on the need to work collectively to improve data management practices within ASEAN, strengthen ASEAN’s international connectivity, facilitate cross border data flows in ASEAN, as well as enhance cybersecurity protection and coordination in order to better position ASEAN for the Digital Economy. The outcomes of TELMIN can pave the way for further regional discussions on how to better manage and harness digital technologies to promote greater resilience and innovation when Singapore assumes Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2018.
4 Minister Yaacob will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Communications and Information, the Infocomm Media Development Authority and the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore.
