Celebrating #WhatMakesSG Through Stories, Photos & Exclusive Interview with PM Lee Hsien Loong

“Why are we different? … I think we work as hard as others but we work together more effectively and so you produce something special” – PM Lee Hsien Loong

In the lead-up to Singapore’s 53rd National Day, the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) has partnered with National Geographic on #WhatMakesSG to celebrate the passion driving Singapore’s progress and how the city-state is taking steps to seize future opportunities.

2 With National Geographic’s distinctive creative style, the stories and photos are captured in a special Singapore edition magazine, which features an exclusive interview with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and a roving photo exhibition, both launched today. There will also be a 60-minute National Geographic documentary, “City of the Future: Singapore”, which will air from 18 August 2018 at 8pm, on National Geographic Channel, via StarHub TV channel 411 or SingTel TV channel 201.

3 “The #WhatMakesSG collaboration represents the diversity and dynamism that is Singapore. MCI is pleased to partner with National Geographic to tell visual stories of what makes Singapore our home, and the people who make our city special. Our skillful photographers have captured evocative and emotional images that celebrate the passion, commitment and teamwork of our people,” said Ms Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information, and Culture, Community and Youth.

4 Mr Rohit D’Silva, Managing Director at Fox Networks Group Asia Pacific and Middle East, said, “Over the past few months, National Geographic has had the joy of partnering with the MCI to use different mediums to tell compelling stories of Singapore. The process of gathering diverse perspectives on Singapore has unraveled enriching insights into Singapore’s astounding successes and future-forward planning. We are privileged to have contributed to collecting and sharing these pieces of content, and look forward to revealing these to both Singaporeans and the world, as Singapore celebrates its National Day this year.

Special Singapore Edition National Geographic Magazine

5 In the exclusive interview with the magazine, Prime Minister Lee shared his views on Singapore’s future, and highlighted the importance of teamwork and collaboration in enabling Singapore’s transformation to a city of the future. This underscores the thoughtful collection of local stories in the magazine, of passionate individuals who are shaping our future home through their pursuits (See Annex A for full copy of PM’s interview).

6 250,000 copies of this limited edition magazine will be distributed across the island, and members of the public can get a complimentary copy at their nearest community centres and libraries from 1 August 2018.

Month-long #WhatMakesSG Roving Exhibition

7 The #WhatMakesSG photography contest held in April, is an example of how different individuals have come together to create something special. Over 7,000 entries were received from people from all walks of life, sharing their views of what makes Singapore unique through their lenses.

8 Five winners were picked by two renowned judges, National Geographic photographer, Michael Yamashita, and Nobel Peace Prize photographer, Sim Chi Yin (see Annex B and C for more details on the winning entries and judges). The contest continues to inspire different perspectives of Singapore, as the #WhatMakesSG trends as a popular hashtag online.

9 To showcase the winning entries and Michael Yamashita’s exclusive images on Singapore, a month-long roving exhibition will be launched, starting 24 July at Suntec City West Atrium. It will then travel to Changi Airport Terminal 4, Jurong Regional Library, Central Public Library and Cheng San Public Library (see Annex D for exhibition details). The first 300 participants at each exhibition location can receive the special Singapore edition National Geographic magazine and a National Geographic goodie bag.

Going Beyond our Shores: “City of the Future: Singapore” Documentary

10 The documentary will be aired on the National Geographic Channel from 18 August, going beyond our shores to reach an international audience. Exploring the nation’s future-minded approaches, the documentary will celebrate our advances in digital technology, architecture, urban sustainability, and economics, giving global viewers a glimpse into Singapore’s future of possibilities.
