"As a UNESCO Creative City of Design, Singapore will continue to use design to improve the lives of Singaporeans, and make Singapore a more livable and lovable city." - Minister of Communications and Information, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim
The local design industry started to take shape in the late 1970s when Singapore’s economy was on the upswing. Since then, ‘design’ has mainly been viewed as a business tool to grow Singapore’s economy. As the city-state progressed, a greater consciousness arose where people realised that design matters in all aspects of our lives—at home, at work, and at play. In order for Singaporeans to reap the benefits of innovation, a national strategy was needed.
