No one is left behind in the switch to Digital TV

Singapore is in the midst of transiting from analogue to digital signals for TV broadcast. Since 16 December 2013, Mediacorp had switched on all our free-to-air TV channels in digital format using the DVB-T2 (Digital Video Broadcasting – Second Generation Terrestrial) transmission standard. Consumers can now enjoy better audio-visual quality and greater variety of content and services. More importantly, spectrum can be freed up for mobile services to meet consumer demand and to support our Smart Nation development.

    Challenges

    1. Ensure the timely switch to digital TV by end-2017 (Singapore’s planned analogue switch-off).
    2. Ensure no one is left behind in the nationwide transition to digital TV so that all segments of our society can continue to enjoy free-to-air TV channels after analogue switch-off.

    Actions

    1. The switch to digital broadcasting involves a change in the transmission and reception of over-the-air TV signals. To this end, Mediacorp is deploying a network of DTV transmitters estate by estate across Singapore.
    2. IMDA is helping low-income households transit smoothly to digital TV through its DTV Assistance Scheme. Under this scheme, eligible households receive for free: i) One DVB-T2 set-top box; ii) one indoor antenna; and iii) Installation service. Details of the Assistance Scheme (including eligibility criteria) can be found at: https://www.imda.gov.sg/community/consumer-education/digital-inclusion/digital-tv-assistance-scheme
