From one-way distribution to two-way interaction, interactive Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is an exciting development that MDA and IDA both support.

On Demand and in Real-Time

Television content over the Internet promises 2-way engagement and interaction.

Unlike traditional programmes, viewers can interact real-time with one another and even with the TV studio. They can also, on demand, stream any programme available to their television sets at home.

High Speed Backbone

To support the fast data transfer speeds that IPTV requires, the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) rolled out the nation’s Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN).

The high speed fibre-optic network enables data to be pushed to screens at a staggering 1Gbps. Next Gen NBN is expected to connect all homes and offices by 2012.

Licences for IPTV

With new technology come new challenges. One of them is effective licensing of IPTV content and service providers.

To encourage more players, the Media Development Authority (MDA) designed a 2-tier licensing framework offering nationwide licences to big players and niche licences for smaller providers.

To date, MDA has given out two nationwide licences and six niche licences.

IPTV Services

Aside from watching movies and TV series over IPTV, consumers can also look forward to a whole slew of services in the pipeline including television commerce, Voice-over-IP, video conferencing and gaming.

While MDA focuses on supporting the creation of content for IPTV, IDA funds the development of technology. Together, they provide holistic support to the industry.

Rolling out IPTV on top of our Next Gen NBN is part of our iN2015 vision to make Singapore a world leader in using infocomm to add value to the economy and society.

Background on Singapore Media Fusion

Supporting and encouraging the development of IPTV content is part the Singapore Media Fusion Plan – the latest update to the media industry’s master plan.

From one-way distribution to two-way interaction, interactive Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is an exciting development that MDA and IDA both support.
