Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Communications and Information, will visit Indonesia from 12 to 14 November 2017.
During his trip, Dr Yaacob will meet Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Mr Rudiantara. He will also meet representatives from digital companies and tech entrepreneurs, including start-ups operating in BLOCK71 Jakarta. BLOCK71 Jakarta is an incubation facility launched in July 2017 by NUS Enterprise and Salim Group. It provides a platform for Singaporean and Indonesia entrepreneurs to connect with one other and to access networks for business development in Indonesia and beyond.
In Yogyakarta, Dr Yaacob will launch the Singapore International Foundation (SIF)’s ‘Words on Wheels’ (WoW) (Yogyakarta) Project on 13 November. WoW is a three-year project in partnership with Board of Library and Archives of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (BPAD DIY). It aims to promote reading and learning among children and youth in local communities by providing access to books, the Internet, and multimedia facilities through a mobile library. This people-to-people project demonstrates the broad bilateral ties between Singapore and Indonesia as the two countries mark the 50th anniversary of relations in 2017.
The mobile library will provide approximately 5,000 students with access to books, as well as laptops and tablets fitted with the Internet and learning applications. Through a series of workshops, specialist volunteers from the National Library Board Singapore will exchange knowledge and expertise with BPAD DIY on library management practices. The WoW project, which was first launched in 2011, has been implemented in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, Jaffna, Sri Lanka and Bandung, Indonesia, impacting over 30,000 children.
Dr Yaacob will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Communications and Information, and the Infocomm Media Development Authority.
