Singapore joins APEC cross border privacy rules and privacy recognition for processors systems.
It is essential that Singapore advocates open data flows across borders and uphold data protection standards to ensure that data is exchanged and used in a responsible way. Singapore will participate in the APEC Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) and Privacy Recognition for Processors (PRP) systems. These are multilateral certification mechanisms that requires organisations to develop and implement data protection policies consistent with the APEC Privacy Framework.
This means that certified companies in Singapore will be able to exchange personal data with other certified companies in participating APEC economies seamlessly. For consumers, they can be rest assured that the transfer of personal data between countries will be subjected to high standards of data protection. PDPC is working on the certification scheme and companies can start applying for the CBPR and PRP systems certification in 2019.
