close Guide for Foreign Media Communications Telecommunications The telecommunications market in Singapore has been fully liberalised since 1 April 2000. There are currently more than 40 facilities-based operators (FBOs) and over 900 services-based operators (SBOs) in Singapore, offering a wide array of telecommunication services to consumers and businesses. The three main operators are SingTel, M1 and Starhub. For more detailed service descriptions, please contact the respective telecommunication service providers. Internet Internet users can go online for free at close to 7,500 Wi-Fi hot spots island-wide at public places such as shopping malls, town centres and the business district. Called Wireless@SG, this offers free wireless access at a speed of up to 1Mbps to anyone who signs up for an account. For those who require higher speeds on this pervasive network, they can take up any of the higher speed paid-subscription plans offered by any one of the three Wireless@SG operators. As of April 2011, the ultra-high speed, all-fibre Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN) has been deployed 70% nationwide and is on track to achieve its target of 95 per cent coverage by mid-2012. Offering pervasive, competitively priced broadband speeds of up to 1Gigabit per second (1Gbps), users will be able to enjoy a richer broadband experience over the Next Gen NBN, at comparable prices to ADSL and cable connection. For more information on Next Gen NBN, please visit the Next Gen NBN website. Postal services The basic letter services market has been liberalised since April 2007 and by the end of 2010, there are 5 licensed operators of basic letter services in Singapore. There are more than 100 providers of express letter service. Singapore Post, the Public Postal Licensee, operates a vast network of postal outlets conveniently located throughout the island. These outlets offer a wide range of postal, telecommunication and agency services. Most postal outlets are open Monday through Friday, from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm and until 1 pm on Saturday. For postal outlets opening hours, advice on postage rates and other postal enquiries, please call 1605 or visit the Singapore Post website.
